Spotted Lantern-Flies

About the Spotted Lantern-fly
The Spotted Lantern-fly (Lycorma delicatula) is a plant hopper insect, native to China and Vietnam, that feed on more than 70 species of crops, plants and trees. It has spread invasively to other regions such as Japan, Korea and the United States. Fruits, ornamental and woody trees- especially tree of heaven- are some of its preferred hosts. The insect feeds on sap, tissue and indirectly affects the health and productivity of its hosts- by impeding photosynthesis. This can be catastrophic to many industries including orchards and landscaping. The lantern fly was first detected in the United States in 2014.

Appearance/Life Cycle:
The Spotted Lantern-Fly appearance changes by each stage of its life-cycle. Adult lantern flies measure about 25 millimeters (1in) long and 12 millimeters (1/2 inch) wide.

From September-December, eggs are laid by the adult lantern fly. Spotted lantern flies lay egg masses containing 30-50 eggs. Eggs are covered in a mud-like coating- both shiny and grey in color. Egg clusters can be laid on trees, structures, etc.

From May- June, the eggs are hatched. Nymph’s are wingless, and are black & white in color. The nymphs are very small and hop/crawl to search for plants to feed off of.

From June-July, the adult Lantern-Fly becomes red in color.

By July-December, the adult Lantern-Fly gets it’s spotted wings, and mating begins. The lantern fly’s life expectancy is one year and the majority of adults die off in December.

While an eradication of this species is just not possible, certain pest control measures have been put into place to prevent long term damage and infestation- by limiting population growth. It is highly suggested that you help your local pest control company, and the state you live in, by “stomping it out” to kill adult lantern flies that you see on your property. It is also highly suggested that you search for egg/egg clusters on trees and other structures. You should scrape off those eggs/clusters in areas that you seem them in- and kill the eggs by popping them or placing them in a bag of alcohol. A treatment from a licensed pest control company consists of a contact application to very specific areas on the property during each treatment cycle to give you the best effectiveness of the treatment.
